One of the first ways I teamed up with shops was as a brand rep. I had no idea they existed or what being one entailed. Brand rep searches were popping up left and right. I was anxious and nervous about whether or not I was able to be picked for any of these teams so I applied to a lot of them. I learned very quickly that my decision was a huge mistake. If you are new to the brand rep world whether it be as a small shop or a brand rep these tips are for you.
What is a Brand Rep?
Small shops hold Brand Rep Searches in order to choose a handful of people to create content for them. These selected individuals are basically promoting their products along with providing pictures for shops to use and display their work. As a brand rep you are basically a model & promoter. Depending on the shop you could have a purchase requirement, engagement rules, and discount codes to offer your followers. Some shops have searches with a few different tiers such as a brand rep, enthusiast, and fans. Each of the tiers with their own rules.

1.Don’t take on too many
I learned this the hard way. I think for the Summer 2017 term I was in about 6-7 different teams. Each with its own requirement and engagement rules. It quickly became too much. Because I was fairly new to the game I accepted them all.
2.Read the requirements
Each team you are on will require a certain amount of time per day/week, make sure you have it. You don’t want to get in over your head. Make sure you can hold up your end of the bargain. Before you agree to be on a team make sure you can keep up with their purchase requirements or their posting requirements. Term lengths will be listed when you apply, make sure you can stay for the full term. If you find that you are unable to continue on a team, let the shop know. It is so much better to communicate and be honest for both you and the shop. It is okay to tell a shop you can no longer be a part of their team. It is all about communication!
3.Being a good rep isn’t just about pictures
Part of being a brand rep is being a cheerleader for the brand. Although taking pictures and providing content for the shops is a key part, you will be noticed if you cheer for the shop! Make sure you engage with all of their posts. Ways I have found to be a cheerleader are; posting on ig stories, share when new items are released, post pictures on your own feeds with their products, always tag their pictures, share your coupon codes, share on facebook, etc. There are endless ways to promote a company, find the one that works for you and just do it!
4.Love the brand
The best advice I can give is to rep for brands you actually like. Don’t apply for searches for brands you would never actually shop with. Your love and support will show through your actions. Trust me it is very noticeable when someone genuinely loves a product. I kept my brands to a small bunch in order to make sure people know I love who Im working with.
Being a brand rep is so much fun, enjoy it! Make the lasting connections with shop owners and other brand reps. The small shop community is made up of so many wonderful and supportive people. Have fun with your teams, have fun with your pictures and promoting. Let your enthusiasm shine through! What’s not to love? Discounts on unique items, beautiful pieces for yourself or your kids, and being a part of the small shop family.
