The old tradition
Growing up I spent just about every Summer in Mexico with my grandmothers. I went back and forth between Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco and Compostela, Nayarit. Both cities are beautiful in their own way and both allowed me this sense of freedom and culture that I did not have back home in the U.S. It became a tradition for my brother and me to spend our summers in Mexico. We spent every day bonding with the family who we did not get to see on the regular.
My summers were spent at the beaches, the rivers, and walking down the local market to pick up my favorite treats. I remember countless days of playing with dolls, dress up, and pretend play. All of this while enjoying the taste of a Kinder treat! Just the pure mention of Kinder treats makes me smile! These beautiful memories are what stand out most of my childhood, and boy do I miss those summers in paradise!
Now let’s fast-forward to my now 28 year old self, with two kids, getting married and working on buying a home. Up until Kinder’s launch in the U.S., you would still catch me at the airport enjoying one last Kinder goodie. Life sure has changed. However, my kids do not enjoy the same traditions I had as a child. There are no summer-long Mexico trips for them. No summers filled with ríos (rivers), beaches, and what seemed like summer-long sleepovers with their cousins. Although they can’t be in Mexico, who says I can’t try and recreate the same fun-filled atmosphere with their cousins here at home?
What is a Kinder Joy egg?
Neither of these girls knew what a Kinder Joy™ egg was! If you don’t know either let me share with you a bit about what makes them so perfect. Kinder Joy™ has two separately sealed halves – a treat side made of two creamy layers and a second half containing a fun mystery toy. They devoured the treat part first and then sat together building their toys and sharing what they had (oh the memories). Before Emma went home she even asked if she could take a Kinder Joy™ home…yes everyone they’re delicious!
Old tradition with a new twist
Zoey, my oldest, is 8 years old. The first and oldest of the grandkids. Fortunately, she has her BFF Emma to keep up with her! (Her dad is one of those cousins I got to visit in Mexico). I have made a promise to myself to make our own version of that old summer long tradition, right down to the delicious Kinder Joy™ eggs! With Kinder Joy now being sold in the U.S., I am able to make sure these girls get to enjoy the same delicious brand that I did growing up.
We have started picnics, pool days, beach days, and museum days so these two can spend their summers together. I know one day they will look back and remember the fun they had creating memories all summer long. Kinder Joy™ has allowed me to create a new twist on an old tradition – my favorite tradition growing up.
The importance of keeping traditions and the value of family for myself as a mother is very important. I was fortunate enough to get the time to bond with my cousins. The busy life we live now does not always allow for all the time we wish we could spend with our family so I am doing my part to keep traditions alive when we can. The summer is as good a time as ever to make sure my children too get their summer-long adventure-filled time with their primos with a Kinder Joy™ egg in hand.
What are some of your favorite traditions as a child? I would love to hear them in the comments below.
