Easy and Inexpensive Kitchen Backsplash

This post is in partnership with The Smart Tiles. However, all opinions expressed are 100% my own. Enjoy.

We moved into our house about 3 weeks ago. It is an older home, with great bones but in need of some tlc and face lifts. One of my biggest projects is our kitchen. We are a family that loves to cook and spend time making delicious meals together. Giving our kitchen a facelift is a total must for us. Our kitchen remodel is in it’s early stages and we already see such a huge difference.

Creating a backsplash is now easy and inexpensive with The Smart Tiles. The first project for our kitchen was our backsplash! Visually it looks like a big project, and it makes the difference of a big project. But in reality, it was THE EASIEST of all our home projects. I partnered up with The Smart Tiles to give my kitchen the new pop it needed.

About The Smart Tiles

So what are smart tiles? They are easy to use, no mess,  peel and stick tiles that give your home a great look without breaking the bank. They have so many styles to choose from to give you the ability to upgrade your kitchen however you like. The Smart Tiles will not crack or turn yellow with time providing us with the durability and longevity we wanted. Not only are they long-lasting they are also super easy to clean and do not require any special care- soap and water will do the trick!

Choosing our style

The general style throughout our home is modern farmhouse. Our kitchen is a spot I felt would be the most farmhouse-y room of them all, so I knew I wanted to go all white. After much review and Pinterest inspiration we decided on the Metro Blanco.  You just can’t go wrong with the all-white subway tile look. Our granite countertops are also such a blend of colors I wanted something that would easily match with anything around it and not make my kitchen clash.

A feature I really love is the way the number of tiles is calculated. The Smart Tiles gives you the ability to simply enter the measurements of your walls and voila! They will give you the number of tiles needed. I would recommend adding a couple extras for human error.

Prepping the kitchen

Fortunately, we had not even unpacked out kitchen so preparing it was fairly easy. We watched some installation videos and read some installation tips on The Smart Tiles website and then got to work. The first step to prepping was to clear everything off the counters and clean our wall. We used a grease-remover and let it dry fully before we began installation.

Measure & Cut

I required A LOT of work from my soon to be husband. This particular area is his specialty. He followed the instructions on the video and measured out the walls along with any of the holes needed for outlets. To cut our tiles we used a box cutter. We read scissors are okay too, however the box cutter seemed easiest for us. Along with this process we drew lines, as recommended by The Smart Tiles, with a level to measure the height of our tiles. This helped us stay even and leveled. After all the numbers and lines aligned we were ready to peel and stick.

When I say it is so easy, I really mean it is so easy! Once you prep your walls it is really as simple as peeling and sticking. Marcos’ perfectionism took hold and he made sure each tile lined up. He started with one row all along the bottom part of our walls. I definitely recommend you finish the first half first and then stack the second (if needed). We contemplated working one wall at a time, however, this would not give us the subway tile look we wanted. After making the first row we were able to measure out and cut the second row. Then we simply peeled and stuck the second row on top, easily overlapping our tiles so there were no gaps and done!

Our kitchen already looks so much difference than it did the day we moved in with a simple and cost-efficient backsplash. After we finished installing we simply threw away the parts we peeled off and put our box cutter away-that is all! As a parent I appreciate easy to use, easy to clean, and budget friendly supplies. Next on our list is painting our cabinets to really tie it all together. Stay tuned for more!
