Hi Friends,

Have you ever noticed when you put your kids down for bed they don’t toss and turn nearly as much as you do as adults? My kids can complain all they want about having to go to bed but within 5 minutes both are fast asleep. My husband and I on the other hand have a whole lot more preparation. Just like with my kids, having a routine helps my husband and I establish better sleep at night. With 2 kids and 2 more on the way, it is more important now than ever to have our routine well established – because with two newborns, sleep gets tricky.

Did you guys know that May is known as Better Sleep Month? The sleep industry spends the month of May working to help bring awareness about the benefits of better sleep and the ways that having poor sleep can disrupt our lives. With the help of the Better Sleep Council website, a content hub based on just about everything sleep related, my husband and I have adopted new tips as well as continuously implemented our own to give us the best sleep we can get. Because guys –  I want to be able to sleep like my kids do! So how do we do it?

Stick to our bedtime

Our kids have bedtimes because it is our way to ensure they have the proper amount of sleep they need to be productive and healthy, so why shouldn’t we have a bedtime also? Create a bedtime that attainable and gives you between 8-9 hours of sleep per night. We base our bedtime around the time my husband gets up for work. I would rather go to bed early and wake up early to get some productive time in than to stay up extra late.

Exercise

A lot of us underestimate the power exercise has over our sleep. Something as simple as taking a daily walk can help you sleep like a kid too! For my husband exercising is a bit more intense than it is for me, but a 30 min. brisk walk does the trick.

Take short naps

Being pregnant with twins means I HAVE TO take a nap every single day to make it to the end of the day without feeling overly exhausted. I get in a 20-30 minute power nap and boy does it make me feel rejuvenated. Napping longer than 30 minutes however has a counterproductive effect and leaves me feeling groggy and even more tired.

Disconnect before bed

This tip is HUGE! We are so connected to technology all day long it is incredibly important for us to put our phones away at least an hour before bed. In our home as soon as dinner starts, the phones and electronics get put away. Having a screen-free evening helps our kids and ourselves unwind and our brains to slow down and relax. Part of it is mental and the other part is the actual light from the screens preventing our brains from powering down.

Warm tea/milk

For our kids, a warm cup of milk before bed puts them in the perfect state of mind. We cut down all caffeine and sugary foods/drinks 2 hours before bed. Again, the plan here is not to hype us up but to help our bodies naturally relax. My husband and I love to have a relaxing cup of warm tea after dinner. It does wonders.

So why is getting enough sleep important?

Well not having enough sleep disrupts almost all aspects of our lives making it difficult to concentrate in the workplace, making us feel fatigued throughout the day, and making us a danger on the road, to name a few things. While browsing the Better Sleep Council website I came across some important information from The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) ; insufficient sleep is a public healthy epidemic.  The CDC has proclaimed that insufficient sleep can cause the following issues:

-depression

-unattractiveness

-skin aging

-weight gain

-less sex

-more disagreements

-marital dissatisfaction

Now you may be wondering – so what is considered sufficient sleep? Well, in a 24-hour period for babies we are talking about 12-16 hours, 3-18 yr olds 8-10 hrs, and 18-60 yr olds need 7+ hrs, 65+ 7-8 hrs per night. If you are sitting here thinking “There is no way I get 8 hours of sleep per day” – try some of the tips mentioned above! We deserve to sleep like a kid too!

If you have any great sleep tips, I’d love to hear them!
